Freedom 4WD Adventures was created by Michael and Alice Hankinson as a way to share their absolute passion for all things camping and touring with others. Over the years we have tried and tested nearly every type of camping – from our very first A frame 2 person (yeah right) tent, through every type of swag, dome tents, multi-room canvas tents, 30 second tents, rooftop tents and camper trailers. We’ve experienced camping with babies, toddlers, kids, grandparents and taken our beloved dogs on many of these amazing adventures.
We have very different tastes in terms of the types of camping we enjoy most. Michael is a qualified electrician and can fix nearly anything that can (and does) go wrong. He is very much a survivalist and likes to put his bush skills to the test by surviving on as little as possible. He can build a shelter out of branches and sleep happily on the ground for a week, eating nothing but a few pieces of beef jerky. Alice on the other hand prefers a little (or a lot!!!) more luxury and loves to look after people. This led her to become a Registered Nurse (very handy when travelling) who has worked in various areas including mental health and rehabilitation. Her camping style is more along the lines of air mattresses, feather pillows, hammocks and heaps of wholesome, delicious and nourishing food.
The tours we provide are a mixture of the two types of camping we both enjoy. We visit remote places and ensure our customers connect with nature and the amazing places we visit. We also show you how to do these places with a touch of style, enjoying luxuries that leave you feeling like you’ve had a well-earned holiday while being surrounded by some of the most spectacular landscapes Australia has to offer.
Each individual trip is tailored to the people we travel with, while making sure to include all the points of interest along the way. We like to provide flexibility to ensure that every member of the family can do and see the things that interest them. We know from well worn experience that it’s hard for parents to relax and enjoy the surroundings, if they are entertaining their kids so we include lots of kid friendly activities while in camp and on the road. This way everyone gets to enjoy their holiday adventure. Our kids love camping and we bring them along to help with this whenever possible.
One thing you won’t have to worry about is the hassle of cooking and cleaning on your trip with us. We take care of this for you which allows you to enjoy your camping trip, while getting a little bit pampered – this is YOUR holiday and we want to make sure everyone comes home with a sense of connection and wellbeing.
Wherever possible, we eat at roadhouses and pubs and find it a great way to absorb the atmosphere of a place, while providing much needed support to the iconic towns and places that make up this spectacular country.
With tours including Bribie Island, Condamine Gorge, Teewah Beach, Cape York and fossicking at Lightning Ridge, we’ve got some of Australia’s most iconic sights covered. Our tours are exhilarating but safe for all members of the family. You’ll get to enjoy the experience of remote camping, while we take care of the cooking, cleaning and planning!
